The Network News: September 11, 2020

Welcome to VETRO’s Network News! We compile cool tidbits of fiber network and broadband news from around the web, to end your week connected.

Welcome to another Friday here at VETRO HQ in Portland, Maine! Here in the US, we had a short week in honor of Labor Day this past Monday. Since news in a post-holiday week is often a bit slow, we thought we would take this week to have a little fun with our Network News.

Trade show season is starting up once again! Next week, we'll be attending the virtual Incompas show from September 14 through 16. Our Enterprise Account Executive Leila Zayed will be on hand to say hello.

The week after, from September 22 through 24th, visit our booth at the virtual BBC summit. Virtual booths are new to us here at VETRO, so we decided to photoshop our CEO Will Mitchell's head into our booth mock up to see what it might look like. Will's cofounding partner and COO Sean Myers will also be joining us, along with members of our biz dev team. Join us, and find out if Will's head is really that big in person!

The team at VETRO HQ has been working from home since March, and we're staying safe. But our team is also growing rapidly, and there are at least a few new VETRO team members who haven't yet met any of their coworkers in person.

That's why when Platform Architect and relative newcomer Michael Pistrang took it upon himself to swing by Automated QA Engineer Gareth Cheeseman's house unannounced to introduce himself in person (from a safe distance of at least six feet), we were quite charmed.

Seen here, Gareth greets Mike for the first time after working together for over three months. Cheers to making the most of the #newnormal, and to doing what we all can to build team and stay connected in this unprecedented time.

We do a live demo and Q&A every two weeks, and we update our YouTube page bi-weekly with the freshly recorded demo. Check out our live walkthrough and Q&A from September 10th with Director of Customer Success Steven Marchessault and Director of Sales Stewart Linsmith on point to answer questions from the audience.

Our good friend Brian Snider, CEO of consultants and service operations provider Lit Communities, will be joining The Broadband Bunch next week to talk open access fiber. From their description:

In this all Q&A panel discussion, participants will hear from operators and vendors who are providing open access networks – networks that generally offer a separation between the physical layer (transmission) provided by one operator and the services layer (products) allowing multiple operators. This system has been in place in the US for years in the middle mile market but is just being tested in the last mile market. While it is gaining strength in European counties, is the US ready to jump-in as a way to offer network infrastructure in areas that might not normally justify the investment? Networks currently operating this model include Utopia in Utah, Grant PUD in Washington, Medina County, Ohio and more. Join us as we discuss what needs to be enabled for success.

Interested? Register here.

We appreciate all of our amazing customers as they continue to build new fiber, scale their existing networks and heal the digital divide. Thank you for joining us this Friday, and have a wonderful weekend from the VETRO team!
